Our friend

Carrie Carriello is my younger daughter's best friend. She also writes for the Huffington Post. She has a beautiful family which includes four boys and a girl, one of whom happens to be autistic, and a devoted husband, Joe. Carrie was featured on tonight's NBC Evening News. She writes so beautifully, never failing to make me either laugh out loud or wipe streaming tears from my cheeks. Her latest post is pertinent to the current discussion about vaccinations. I offer it to you just so you can enjoy her beautiful gift of crafting words. Enjoy. No pro con vax discussions , please. Just enjoy her words.

  1. Bunny, thank you for posting that. It truly was beautiful; Carrie is clearly a gifted writer. I am a retired pediatrician; reading her words brought tears to my eyes remembering some very special young patients. As a mom, I could relate on a whole different level. So powerful. Leave it to a child to put things into perspective.

  4. My nephew, Alex, has autism. He is now 26 years old. He is the sweetest, gentlest man I know. He always tells the truth--even if you don't want to hear it. He plays piano like Beethoven and doesn't even know how good he is so his ego never gets in the way. He sends cards to everyone in the family for birthdays and holidays---never misses a one. At family events he is the official photographer. He will never let you hold his camera, but he will take a picture for you with yours. When I met Alex as an infant, his uncle and I hadn't married and I don't remember much about him. I became his aunt 10 yrs ago and have loved every moment spent with him! Thanks for sharing this beautiful article, made me smile and shed a tear.

  6. My son is autistic and I can relate to everything Carrie is writing about. As a parent you always wonder what caused it or what can I blame this on. There is no right answer, I can say that genetics is at least part of the problem. Meanwhile, I continue to guide my son he is 28 and works part-time and give him all of the support he needs.

  8. Lovely! I've taught some of these children and loved them just the way they are. A relative's child is autistic and this article made me think so much of his wonderful parents.

  11. We always say about our autistic granddaughter...she is just being herself (putting her name in for herself!). She has been "just herself" for 21 years now...she has always and continues "to march to a different drummer!" Thanks for sharing this!

Had to Refurbish This One!
